Choosing bathroom lighting fixtures

People spend time in the bathroom not just to take a hurried wash but to rinse away a day’s tiredness and groom one’s self. Proper lighting in the bathroom ensures one doesn’t struggle to find things or fail to look at one’s self in the mirror. Suitable lighting fixtures in bathrooms enable one to get the right shave or the right make-up for a date. A bathroom is a place with lots of moisture and condensed soapy deposits, and hence it is vital to choose the right kind of material for bathroom lighting fixtures. Proper lighting in the bathroom is as essential as in any other place. Lighting fixtures have become more then just a means for gaining light. Apart from their aesthetic significance, bathroom lighting fixtures ensure that the bulbs are held in the right position. You can choose from many different styles and types, colours and designs. Solar or not. Bright or faint. The bathroom lighting can be relaxing and soothing by using subtle lights and lighting fixtures. Today, a well-lit bathroom depends on a savvy lighting mix. The right lighting can make a bathroom much more gracious. Today there is a great opportunity to match the finish of the plumbing accessories with the light fixtures. There is a huge array of styles in the market—from very ornate poly-resin cast products to sleek satin nickel fixtures with opal matte glass in a variety of shapes and sizes. Available bathroom light fixtures come in choices of styles that include art deco, contemporary, rustic and traditional, among others. Finishes for these designs may include brass, bronze, gold-plated and black as well a few more options, depending on the brand or manufacturer.

Our bathroom lighting at Richard Hathaways come with two to six shades in many different styles such as translucent, frosted, or clear. The metal parts of these bathroom lighting are also available in a number of metals and finishes. For example, you will find brass, copper, stainless steel, and nickel. For finishes, there is polished, brushed, and antique. Call 01225 758335 or Contact Richard Hathaway Lighting to enquire about bathroom lighting options for your home.

The globe type of bathroom lighting has been around for years. (Like our Bathroom wall light, rated I.P.44) Globes are round, white glass bulbs that completely encase the actual light bulb. Globe lighting is affordable, simplistic, and looks nice. It offers a light that is strong, wide, and diffused, making it a great choice. Globes can be the primary fixture in the bathroom or, you might find them installed above the vanity or sink. Recessed bathroom lighting is probably the most popular type of light of the present day. This lighting fixture illuminates the entire room and can be installed with full light or with a dimmer switch. To brighten your bathtub, it is worthwhile considering recessed lighting controlled by a dimmer switch. The recessed lighting will be focused on the perimeter of the tub to avoid glare, and the dimmer switch will allow you to create an atmosphere of tranquillity for those times when you need a relaxing soak in the tub. These bathroom lighting fixtures give respite from deposited moisture and soapy condensations deposited on bathroom fixtures, as the actual fixtures are recessed inside the ceiling. However, their installation and wiring is expensive, as they are embedded inside the ceiling. To create an extra layer of lighting it would be good to try a small recessed light directed at a piece of decorative art work or a beautiful powder basin.

New technology has added options as well. Fibre optics, with its remote light source, can create twinkling star effects when inset into bathroom ceilings. Halogen bulbs with their variety of sizes allow manufacturers to design more ornate light fixtures. Unusual light sources like wall sconces, sky lights, and lamps perched on a table, vanity or bathroom island provide an unexpected touch. Shower lights brighten up enclosed stalls. Reading lamps by the toilet provide more focused light. Single sconces on either side of the mirror remain popular. To be most effective, begin your bathroom lighting scheme at the vanity with the lights that do the most work. These lights must be bright enough so you can see to shave or apply makeup, yet soft enough to compliment facial features. Fixtures located on each side of the mirror should be set at eye level to be most effective. Theatrical-style lighting stripped along the sides and across the top of the mirror also do a good job.

Bulb selection is as important as choosing and placing the right fixture. When choosing your bathroom light fixtures, you should always consider what kind of lights you plan to use. In general, fluorescent is not a great choice; it tends to make people greenish or washed out. Instead, go for incandescent bulbs, or bulbs that advertise their similarity to daylight. For lighting vanity areas, try coloured or coated bulbs designed to enhance facial features. Check with local building inspectors about electrical codes before installing any new lighting. Fixtures used in wet areas must be approved for such a specific use.

How your bathroom is set up will determine many of the possible bathroom lighting configurations you can use.  For example, the smaller the bathroom, the more compact you want your lighting to be so as not to take up unnecessary room.  For these kinds of smaller bathrooms, you might want to look into overhead lighting that will allow the room to look brighter in all areas, which then makes it look larger.  Or you can use track lighting that is installed on the walls, giving you lighting without additional space being needed. Sometimes there are restrictions on the placement of various types of lighting fixtures. Portable lamps, for example, should not be put near a sink or tub because of the possibility that it might fall into the water and electrocute you. Having a bathroom light that includes a row of bulbs is your best bet. One that also includes bulbs down the side is even better. Have you ever seen what the dressing rooms look like that they use on TV? You see rows of bulb up and down and along the top. It is due to the fact that this type of setup provides the best kind of light possible. There is no shadowing or areas that can not be seen well.

Light is available in all directions instead of just over the top so to speak. Bathroom light fixtures can be placed in the following varies places:

Bright bathroom lights are great for in the morning when you need to be woken up, while softer, dim lights are terrific for a nice quiet evening soaking in the tub. The best way to make sense of all the options and choose what is best for your bathroom is to plan your lighting scheme around the activity or activities that will take place in the room. What type of light source is best? There are three types of light sources to choose from when planning your lighting scheme- halogen, fluorescent, or incandescent. Incandescent bulbs are most commonly used in residential applications. This type of bulb produces warm, natural-looking light that resembles daylight. Fluorescent light, which is most often used in commercial settings, is more economical than incandescent because it produces less heat and less energy (about 7 watts compared to 60 watts). Fluorescent bulbs also tend to last longer, because they don’t contain filaments. On average, one fluorescent bulb can last up to six years longer than an incandescent bulb. However, it’s important to remember that fluorescent light makes skin tones look less natural, and many fluorescent bulb types can’t be dimmed. Halogen light is another energy-saving option. Halogen bulbs are filled with halogen gas, which causes the particles of tungsten to be redeposited onto the tungsten filament. The result is longer-lasting, whiter, and brighter light than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs can render. Though they last longer and have low energy output, halogen bulbs are typically more expensive and bulkier than their counterparts. Also, keep in mind that their non-standard contact elements require your fixtures and housing to be halogen-compatible, so you could be looking at a significant initial cost outlay.
